BOE will gradually give up low-end TV screen will push 8K TV screen within two years

On November 17th, BOE’s first 10K LCD screen in the world took its first appearance in China at the stage of Shenzhen Hi-Tech Fair. Zhang Yu, vice president of BOE, told reporters that the 10K liquid crystal display that achieves a definite effect will be used first in museums, art galleries, and cinemas.

Zhang Yu believes that although the current LCD TV panels have signs of oversupply, but in the era of Internet of Things, innovative applications will relieve pressure on the panel overcapacity, so BOE may start before the end of this year 10.5 generation LCD panel line. In the future, BOE will gradually give up its low-end TV screen and plans to launch 8K LCD TV panels from 2016 to 2017.

Large size ultra HD trend

In the face of next step display technology OLED step by step, LCD (liquid crystal) continues to break the clarity of the ceiling. At present, 4K has become the standard for mainstream LCD TVs. 8K LCD panels, BOE, Sharp, LGD and other shielded keywords have been launched. BOE took the lead this year to introduce the world's first 82-inch 10K ultra-high-definition liquid crystal display.

The 10K resolution is as high as 10240X4320, which is 21 times the resolution of mainstream HDTVs. However, even 4K video content is insufficient, not to mention 8K, 10K content, so what application prospects of ultra-high-definition display?

Zhang Yu said that BOE's 82-inch 10K ultra high-definition display is mainly aimed at large-size ultra-high-definition markets, such as high-end commercials, video broadcasts, public displays, museums, and art galleries. In addition, it can also be used in homes to bring a super theater experience. "10K LCD screens have just been listed and they have started to contact customers."

The application of 8K display has been pushed away. Zhang Yu revealed that BOE is joining hands with Hollywood resources to promote the shooting of 8K movies, giving users a better sense of involvement. In the medical field, microscopic surgery uses 8K display technology. The images are more detailed and clear, which can reduce errors and can also be used for teaching. Previously, BOE also assisted Japanese NHK TV stations to perform 8K playback tour demonstrations.

Hefei 10.5 Line will start construction

This year, the LCD TV panel market in China has seen signs of oversupply. However, BOE still decided to invest in the 10.5 generation line in Hefei to become the world's highest generation LCD panel line, which can economically cut more than 65 inches of panel. Zhang Yu revealed that the project may start construction before the end of this year.

“The five major traditional display markets for mobile phones, tablets, televisions, monitors, and laptops have seen a 3% increase in demand for panels in 2015.” said Zhang Yu, so the greater potential lies in the innovative application market, automotive, wearable, medical, transparent, The new application market, such as mirrors, has great growth potential and is the key to releasing production capacity.

The Internet of Things is gradually coming to an end. The greater the amount of interactive information, the greater the demand for display. Zhang Yu believes that, as in the automotive industry, unmanned vehicles will use new technologies such as flexible displays and virtual augmented reality in their vehicles.

Therefore, BOE continues to actively deploy new display technologies. In the first half of this year, it started to build 6-generation flexible display production lines in Chengdu. Zhang Yu revealed that it is expected to start production in 2017 and mainly produce AMOLED panels of small and medium size. BOE also holds two virtual augmented reality technology companies in the United States.

After the 10.5 line is put into production in the future, the production capacity of large-sized TV panels will increase. Zhang Yu said that BOE will gradually give up its low-end TV screen products and plans to launch 8K LCD TV screens from 2016 to 2017.
