Google refuses military funding to participate in its robotics research and development project

Although Google (microblogging) has two companies that are contractors of the US government, it has abandoned the military investment provided by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Google acquired a robot company called Schaft, which developed a biped robot that won a robotics competition at the Defense Vision Research and Planning Bureau. The competition required participating companies to develop a robot that could perform disaster response tasks such as searching for wrecks, climbing ladders, and closing valves.

The robot developed by Schaft scored the highest score in the competition. But officials from the Defense Vision Research and Planning Bureau announced last week that Google and Schaft did not receive bonuses at all.

Google’s revenue in 2013 reached $37 billion, but on the development of the next generation of robots, it seems to want to keep a distance from the military.

In addition to Schaft, Google also acquired a robot company called Boston Dynamics. The company also has business dealings with the Defense Vision Research and Planning Bureau, which is responsible for developing a variety of equipment accessories for the latter.

Boston Dynamics has developed a number of robots such as the Big Dog, a four-legged robot that delivers supplies to combatants in all terrains. It also developed a robot called Sand Flea, which is only 11 pounds and comes with a lot of sensors that can jump to the roof or skip high walls.

Robots have played an important role in the military field. If Google continues to selectively cooperate with the highest military research institutions, it may affect the level of technology that the military can use.

On the one hand, Google is a company that is better suited to lead innovative R&D projects, not military suppliers. However, if Google is not willing to cooperate with the military, it will be difficult to say whether the military can benefit from technological advancement.
