Recently, Maxim introduced the MAX16803, an adjustable constant current source that delivers up to 350mA to drive one or more columns of high-brightness LEDs (HB LEDs). The wide input voltage range of 6.5V to 40V can effectively avoid large transients such as load shedding and cold start. A wide range of brightness adjustments is achieved with the high voltage (40V) PWM pin. The MAX16803 is ideal for automotive lighting, LED display backlighting, industrial and building lighting applications. The MAX16803 regulator combines a low-voltage (204mV) current sense reference with differential LED current sensing to provide ±3.5% load current accuracy. This current accuracy allows for uniform brightness across all lighting components. The device's built-in low dropout regulator (typically 0.5V) and current sense reference minimizes system power consumption. Parallel multi-chip MAX16803 LED driver ICs can deliver more than 350mA to drive a single high-power LED. Brightness adjustment is performed using the output PWM dimming technique, which is accomplished by loading a pulse input on a dedicated dimming input (DIM) or VIN pin. The waveform shaping circuit produces smooth and extended LED current rising and falling edges to suppress EMI that illuminates and turns off transients. The 5V fixed output regulator provides up to 4mA of load current for low power applications over the entire 6.5V to 40V input voltage range. For greater design flexibility, the regulator can also power microcontrollers or other external components. The regulator remains on even if the DIM input is pulled low. Only two small ceramic capacitors and a small sense resistor are required outside the regulator, which greatly saves board size and total drive cost. The MAX16803 is rated for operation in the automotive temperature range (-40 degrees to +125 degrees). Provides thermal and short circuit protection. The device is available in a thermally enhanced, surface mount, 5mm x 5mm, 16-pin TQFN package with a rated power dissipation of 2.67W. Lead-free packages are also available. The device starts at $0.99 (1000 sheets, FOB USA).
