Zhejiang University's Department of Chemistry has made important progress in the research of quantum dot light-emitting diodes

On November 5, according to the website of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, under the support of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (21233005), the Peng Xiaogang Group of Chemistry Department of Zhejiang University and the Jin Yizheng Group of Materials Department collaborated on quantum dot light-emitting diodes. (QLED) has made important progress in the research field.

Related research results are published in Nature. This paper reports a new type of LED device using quantum dots as electroluminescent materials. Its performance far exceeds other quantum dot LEDs reported in the current literature, and the new device can be prepared by a simple solution processing route.

LED has been recognized as the core device for next-generation lighting and display. LED devices for GaN epitaxial growth quantum wells are currently popular on the market. However, GaN epitaxial growth quantum wells require conditions such as ultra-high vacuum, ultra-high purity materials, and ultra-density power consumption. To this end, both the display industry and the lighting industry have chosen a relatively low-cost idea of ​​combining blue LEDs with down-converted rare earth phosphors. This combination of routes leads to defects such as low light quality and incomplete color gamut.

Unlike GaN quantum well LEDs, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices have organic light-emitting centers that can be prepared with less demanding vacuum conditions. OLEDs have been applied on small screen displays. However, since the OLED electroluminescent center is an organic molecule, thermal stability and chemical stability have always been a difficult problem. Its direct performance is that the processing requirements of the device are severe, and the device lifetime often fails to meet expectations.

Clearly, QLED is expected to combine the advantages of both GaN quantum well LEDs and OLEDs. However, after 20 years of unremitting efforts by scientists, QLED's comprehensive performance – including efficiency, longevity, and processing technology – is far behind expectations. This is mainly due to the compatibility of quantum dots with QLED devices and the special structure of QLEDs.

The team of Zhejiang University designed and synthesized a special quantum dot for QLED, and analyzed the device characteristics of QLED itself, thus finding the key problems of the structure of the device, and then solving the positive problem by inserting a layer of nano-insulation layer in the device. The key difficulty of load stream injection balance. The success of these two aspects has experimentally verified the feasibility of practical application of QLED. This indicates that QLED is expected to play an important role in the lighting and display industries.
