BOE launches 10.5 generation line next month, 8K screen arrives ahead of schedule

8K resolution, as the name suggests, refers to a display with 7680 horizontal pixels and 4320 vertical pixels, resulting in approximately 33 million pixels per frame. This resolution is four times that of 4K and 16 times higher than 1080p, offering an incredibly sharp and immersive visual experience. At the BOE Global Innovation Partner Conference in 2017, Chairman Wang Dongsheng revealed that the Hefei 10.5-generation line, initially planned for 2018, would go into production earlier this year as part of the company’s broader IoT strategy. With the rise of full-screen displays, flexible screens, and 8K ultra-high-definition technology, companies involved in the upstream panel manufacturing have gained significant attention. After announcing the mass production of China’s first flexible display line, BOE hosted a global innovation partner conference in Wuhan. Wang Dongsheng, known for his low-key approach, discussed BOE’s IoT strategy and outlined new business directions, focusing on smart port solutions and services related to information interaction and human health. BOE aims to collaborate with industry partners to build a comprehensive IoT ecosystem. According to Wang, the company's approach involves “opening both ends” — open technology and open applications — while maintaining four core capabilities: display, sensing, artificial intelligence, and big data. These include display and sensor components, smart systems, and health-related services. When discussing the IoT ecosystem, Wang emphasized that the IoT era requires collaboration across the entire industrial chain. Over the past year, BOE has partnered with Intel on intelligent interactive shopping stations, formed an "8K+5G" industrial ecosystem with Huawei, established the "China Medical Silicon Valley" with Beihang University, and collaborated with Alibaba on new retail initiatives. In BOE’s 8K industrial ecosystem, the goal is to promote 8K adoption, popularize 4K, replace 2K, and leverage 5G technology. According to recent announcements, the 10.5-generation LCD panel line in Hefei will begin production next month, with a second line in Wuhan also set to launch soon. The 10.5-generation line was designed to meet the growing demand for ultra-high-definition (8K) and large-size displays. The Hefei 10.5-generation line, constructed in 2015, was the world’s first 10.5th-generation TFT-LCD production line at the time. It is the largest LCD project globally and the biggest single investment in China’s industrial history, originally scheduled for 2018. However, it is now expected to start mass production earlier than planned. Additionally, BOE announced a total investment of 4.6 billion yuan in August to build a second 10.5-generation line in Wuhan. This line will mainly produce 65-inch LCD modules, with an estimated monthly capacity of 120,000 units. Looking ahead, BOE expects to become the world’s largest manufacturer of high-generation (over 6 generations) LCD panels by 2020. The investment in the Wuhan 10.5-generation line is expected to significantly enhance its competitiveness in the large-size LCD market.
