LED technology advancement makes new car design possible

In recent years, LED technology has experienced tremendous development and has been widely used in various fields of life. Due to its compact design , high energy efficiency and durability, it has gradually replaced traditional lighting.

The lighting industry is also increasingly adopting LED technology. In addition to the high degree of freedom of design, economics is also an important consideration. LEDs require only a fraction of the energy of a conventional luminaire to achieve the same level of illumination. Therefore, LEDs will ultimately make a significant contribution to reducing energy consumption.

Design and safety

In the automotive industry, with LEDs, new design concepts have become possible, with a major impact on brand and form appearance. Today's manufacturers use LED technology to give the vehicle a "face" to let people know about functional operating elements or create a more enjoyable environment for the interior of the car.

LED technology advancement makes new car design possible

LED technology brings convenience to users and consumers, so we don't know why experts inside Albis Plastics in Hamburg, Germany, have been paying attention to this trend very early and developing suitable products. .

Ambient lighting devices, in another way, that any indirect form of lighting inside the car, have attracted more and more interest from designers. The design trend moves from a pure search function to a “home atmosphere”. Long-distance light guides are achieved with as little loss of brightness as possible, and uniform illumination is also used inside the car. To this end, there is a need for a complete, transparent, transparent (optical waveguide device) to diffuse, divergent (soft-mirror), even highly reflective and opaque (reflector) full bandwidth. The color diversity and lumens of the LEDs adjust the atmosphere to the driver's personal feelings. This is expected to improve the safety and comfort of night driving.

The vehicle's exterior lighting system has also been continuously improved, not only improving the safety of night driving, but also creating a unique design for the enterprise. The material requirements for LED daytime running lights , LED headlights and complex guide lights meet the high demands of today's luminaire manufacturing (title picture). A soft lens made of special polycarbonate can achieve high light output without glare. The addition of smart fillers to amorphous and partially crystalline plastics reduces the cost of the front and rear lamp reflectors, but does not significantly affect the light output. Albis Plastics is also developing higher-end composites to meet the demand for ever-increasing headlights.

Visualization of information

Lighting plays an important role in automotive applications. This is especially true in automotive interior components and systems. For example, in order to make it easy for the driver to see the information, the instrument group illumination inside the car should be improved as much as possible. This can be done by installing a mirror inside the instrument cluster. In addition to meeting the mechanical and thermal performance requirements of this area, it must also have exceptionally high dimensional stability and high reflectivity for the light source used.

To meet this requirement, Albis Plastics has developed a special Alcom LB (photoresist) material based on a variety of thermoplastics. The material has a high gloss, high whiteness and a 97% reflectance.

In addition to the high illuminance of the instrument cluster, it is also important to provide a clear message to the driver. For example, if, for example, when the oil quantity is low, the trigger displays the “refueling” message, and no other symbols are lit nearby. The smaller and smaller installation space allows the different indicator spaces in the instrument cluster to be separated by very thin walls (sometimes only 0.5mm thick). Moreover, the "pure white" material has a relatively high light transmission, making it particularly easy for the red waves in the light to traverse into the space in which the adjacent lamps are located. Albis Plastics accepted this challenge and developed a product based on an intelligent color formula that does not pass even a wall thickness of 0.5 mm. The overall transmittance of light is generally less than 0.6%.

The area of illumination used in a car typically includes a plurality of illuminated buttons, the buttons being made of opaque material and coated with the desired button color (eg, black or silver). The actual button design is then treated with a laser to expose the opaque substrate. Albis Plastics has developed a variety of Alcom LD grades based on polycarbonate (PC) and other opaque thermoplastics.

The application requirements in this field are very diverse. The button is not illuminated (daytime design) and the logo is strongly contrasted with the color applied to the button, so be careful. Silver-coated buttons mean dark colors and opaque materials. On the other hand, in the case of a bright light (night design), care should be taken to identify the color of the selected LED, and be careful of the heat source below to create a “hot spot”. Moreover, drivers are needed – regardless of their height, and the front passengers can see the information on the button equally clearly. Therefore, the materials used should be very opaque and the light uniformity is very good. The discharge of the lamp should ensure that the light can be emitted evenly forward with minimal loss (Figure 1). This can be achieved by a mixture of different dispersants. For example, certain pigments must be used to ensure that the brightness and color positioning of the nighttime mode light markers should be consistent when black and silver buttons are adjacently discharged.
