How to send out quality AR content for mobile devices Google personally gave some design guidelines

In recent years, many people have experienced VR through costly head-mounted displays like Cardboard or Daydream View, or high-end PCs such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. However, the landscape is shifting—AR (Augmented Reality) is now accessible directly on mobile devices, offering a new way to blend digital content with the real world. AR has the potential to enrich everyday experiences by providing additional layers of information. Yet, as a relatively new technology, it requires careful consideration when designing user interactions. After exploring various approaches, we’ve identified several design strategies applicable to AR platforms. We examined existing designs from head-mounted displays, mobile VR apps, and deep-sensing AR applications. For instance, Google Earth VR and Tilt Brush allow users to explore and create using two positionally tracked controllers. This “daydreaming” experience gives us insight into the opportunities and limitations of mobile immersion. But mobile AR also brings unique challenges—like adapting to different environments, ensuring it doesn’t interfere with core device functions, such as phone calls, and maintaining usability across varying screen sizes and orientations. Mobile devices act as the gateway to the augmented world, so creators must think about how to make interactive elements discoverable, intuitive, and easy to use with one hand or even without hands. The camera, touch screen, and proximity sensors work together to create an immersive experience, but since users often hold their phones with one hand, simplicity and clarity in interaction are crucial. Understanding user behavior is key. Traditional 2D interfaces often lead to static, seated experiences, but AR can encourage movement and exploration. By using world-locked UIs or other interactive models, developers can guide users through physical spaces, helping them better engage with 3D content. This not only makes learning easier but also enhances the overall AR experience, allowing users to view objects from multiple angles. Environmental awareness is another important factor. Each AR application creates a dedicated space where real-world actions take place. With tools like ARCore, developers can detect planes at different heights and sizes, enabling volumetric responsive design. This helps digital objects respond appropriately to user interactions and allows visual cues to guide users through physical movements, enhancing engagement and encouraging scanning behaviors. Visual realism plays a big role in making AR feel natural. Advanced display and lighting technologies help digital objects blend seamlessly into the real environment. Volumetric interaction modes complement 3D AR experiences, allowing users to interact more naturally with virtual objects. These interactions are essential for understanding spatial relationships and managing user expectations about where digital content is placed. In mobile AR, 2D screen-locked UIs offer a “magic-hand” interface, letting users interact with virtual objects via touch. While remote interaction is appealing, overuse of 2D elements can break immersion. Instead, designers should focus on leveraging platform detection, object depth, and device positioning to encourage exploration in 3D space. To enhance immersion, AR experiences should focus on core interaction mechanics like object manipulation, navigation, and visual guidance. Fixing positions or scaling objects dynamically improves readability and usability. Using reticles or ray casting helps understand user intent, while scaling objects based on camera direction adds a sense of depth. When users approach a digital object, it can react or reveal more details, rewarding exploration and encouraging deeper interaction. Overall, designing for mobile AR requires a balance between innovation and usability, ensuring that the experience feels natural, engaging, and intuitive.
