Intel faces a significant 5G era

The key difference between 5G and 4G lies in the need for more extensive ecosystem collaboration. On one side, Intel is strengthening its relationships with telecom operators and communication equipment manufacturers. On the other, it’s actively partnering with industry leaders like GE and BMW to explore new 5G applications in vertical markets, aiming to drive innovation from real-world use cases. Intel CEO Brian M. Krzanich once famously said, “Data is the oil of the future,” highlighting the company’s shift from being a traditional processor manufacturer to a data-centric enterprise. Intel continues to invest heavily in emerging fields such as cloud computing, big data, 5G, and artificial intelligence, positioning itself at the forefront of technological transformation. At the Intel China Industry Summit, Sandra Rivera, Senior Vice President of Intel Corporation and General Manager of the Network Platform Business Unit, emphasized that Intel’s focus is on data. She explained that the company is investing in areas where data is generated, transmitted, compressed, encrypted, stored, and transferred. For her, everything related to data is central to Intel’s strategy. Rivera believes that Intel’s role is to create end-to-end solutions, from data collection at the edge to transmission over networks and processing in data centers. “For 5G, it’s not just about mobile phones or the air interface,” she said. “It’s about enabling infinite intelligence and connectivity. Intel has always been leading in this space.” Despite competition from companies like Samsung, TSMC, Qualcomm, and NVIDIA, Intel faces challenges in transforming efficiently and maintaining profitability. While its data center and IoT businesses are growing, the company must adapt quickly to stay ahead in an evolving tech landscape. Since 1992, Intel has been the world’s top semiconductor company. However, with declining PC sales and the rise of smartphones and mobile devices, former competitors have grown into serious rivals. NVIDIA, for instance, now leads in the deep learning market, with many global tech giants relying on its GPUs for AI development. For Intel, relying solely on chip performance is no longer enough. Becoming a “data company” is now a core part of its identity. In fields like AI and autonomous driving, Intel sees vast opportunities, especially in handling complex computational tasks that go beyond traditional PCs and servers. Take AI, for example. According to Rivera, the heart of AI is extracting valuable insights from data to deliver meaningful services. She shared an example from Australia, where AI is used to detect sharks near beaches. Drones capture images, machine vision identifies species, and if a shark is spotted, speakers warn swimmers, showcasing how AI can be applied in real-world scenarios. The 5G era represents a major shift for Intel. “5G is truly the fusion of communication and computing,” Rivera said. Unlike previous generations, where the wireless interface was the main focus, 5G introduces distributed, scalable, and flexible computing. It enables new applications and services that were previously either non-existent or too costly to implement. Intel’s 5G strategy covers all aspects—networks, clouds, and devices. From modulation and demodulation technologies in smart devices to network infrastructure products, Intel is involved in every layer, from edge to core networks and data centers. However, the success of 5G depends even more on ecosystem collaboration than 4G. Intel is working closely with telecom operators and equipment manufacturers while also engaging with vertical industry leaders like GE and BMW to unlock new 5G applications. “Data centers are becoming the center of opportunity,” Rivera noted. For Intel, this is not just a new challenge but a significant growth area for a long-standing technology leader.
