According to recent reports from Japanese media, researchers at the University of Tokyo's Advanced Research Center for Science and Technology have made a breakthrough in perovskite solar cell technology. They achieved a record 20.5% conversion efficiency without relying on rare metals like antimony. More importantly, their design also ensures stable power generation over time.
The key to this advancement lies in the use of potassium to enhance the stability of the crystalline structure. By carefully adjusting the composition, the team was able to create a defect-free layer that allows for efficient electron flow, significantly improving both efficiency and durability. This approach not only reduces costs but also makes the technology more sustainable.
In addition to improving performance, the researchers found that potassium can help suppress a phenomenon known as "hysteresis," which causes fluctuations in power output during testing. This issue has long been a challenge in measuring accurate conversion efficiency. Using potassium, they were able to stabilize the output more effectively than with traditional materials like antimony.
The project is part of Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) initiative, which aims to push the boundaries of solar technology. The goal is to reach 25% efficiency by 2020 and maintain over 95% efficiency after 10,000 hours of operation. This progress highlights the importance of using abundant and low-cost materials, making perovskite solar cells a promising alternative to traditional silicon-based systems.
