Texas Instruments has been actively involved in the Ministry of Education's school-enterprise cooperation and collaborative education program since 2015. In its first year, the company supported 38 projects, followed by 94 in 2016. This year alone, it has supported 110 projects across eight categories, including curriculum reform, new engineering subjects, undergraduate training, teacher development, practical infrastructure, off-campus practice bases, innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives, and more. At the 2017 Texas Instruments China Educators Annual Conference in Xiamen, Dr. Wang Chengning, Director of the Asia-Pacific University Program at Texas Instruments, shared insights into the company’s long-term educational efforts.
This year, Texas Instruments is focusing on transforming scattered laboratory setups into integrated experimental centers. For example, pilot projects at Zhejiang University of Communications and Shanghai Jiao Tong University aim to unify multiple labs under a single, coordinated framework for better curriculum design and student learning experiences.
In innovation and entrepreneurship education, Texas Instruments has established an innovation center at Chongqing University, integrating analog, SCM, and C2000 labs to support project-based learning and competitions. The goal is to make use of existing resources to foster creativity and problem-solving skills among students.
Regarding teaching reforms, Texas Instruments is working with schools to modernize outdated curricula. It has partnered with the National Electrotechnical Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center to develop hands-on case studies that improve students’ ability to tackle complex problems. Pocket laboratories and supplementary courses are also being introduced to enhance the learning experience, as seen in initiatives like the quad-rotor kit at Xiamen University and self-balancing vehicle programs at Hebei University of Technology.
Texas Instruments emphasizes systematic teaching methods, encouraging students to think holistically about system design from their sophomore year onward. To support this, the company has invited professors from the University of Georgia to share their approaches. Pilot programs are being implemented at Zhejiang University to test these new methods.
In competition support, Texas Instruments has participated in major events such as the National Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest and the National University Biological Network Design Competition. It provided over 10,000 development boards for the former and 500 sets for the latter. The company also supported the 2017 National Undergraduate Robotics Competition, offering chip-level technical assistance to teams.
Looking ahead, Texas Instruments aims to bring more innovation to competitions by introducing topics related to wireless and IoT technologies. It plans to expand access to competition content through video tutorials, online courses, and training websites, ensuring more students can benefit even if they don’t participate directly.
Beyond university programs, Texas Instruments invests heavily in education through corporate social responsibility initiatives. In the U.S., it supports STEM (later STEAM) programs, and in China, it collaborates with schools in Shanghai and Beijing to integrate STEAM into primary and secondary curricula. The company also provides hardware, courseware, and volunteer teachers to help schools establish science and technology programs.
Additionally, Texas Instruments partners with the Youth Foundation to build Hope Primary Schools in China. As of now, eight schools have been selected, with four already operational. Employees regularly volunteer to teach and contribute to community projects, reinforcing the company’s commitment to social impact.
By investing in education from elementary to university levels, Texas Instruments not only strengthens its brand but also fosters a sense of community and purpose among employees. Its long-term vision extends beyond profit, aiming to be a socially responsible and memorable global company.
