There are several types of ESD protection devices available in the market today, with the most common being polymers, varistors/suppressors, and diodes. Choosing the right ESD protection device can be challenging, as it's not always clear which one offers the best level of protection. Many system vendors rely on ESD ratings or nominal values from the datasheet, but these figures alone don’t tell the whole story. Other parameters, such as clamping voltage and residual current, play a critical role in determining real-world performance.
When selecting an ESD protection component, it’s important to consider more than just the ESD rating. The clamping voltage—the voltage at which the device limits the surge—and the residual current that flows through the protected circuit are key factors. A good ESD protector should quickly divert most of the current to ground, keeping the voltage at the ASIC terminal below the threshold that could cause damage.
Measuring clamping voltage and residual current isn't straightforward. Most datasheets only list clamping voltages under specific test conditions, which may not reflect real-world scenarios. Residual current is often omitted because it depends on the system layout rather than the device itself. An alternative parameter, dynamic resistance (Rdyn), can help compare different devices, as lower resistance means better current diversion. However, this value is rarely included in standard ESD protection device specifications.
Polymer Devices
Polymer-based ESD protectors are popular for high-frequency applications due to their very low capacitance, typically between 0.05 and 1.0 pF. However, this low capacitance can come with trade-offs. Unlike diodes, polymer devices require a higher trigger voltage before they activate. A typical polymer ESD device doesn’t start conducting until around 500V, after which it clamps the voltage to about 150V. Once the surge passes, the polymer returns to a high-impedance state—but this recovery can take hours or even a full day. This makes them unsuitable for many consumer electronics where quick recovery is essential. Additionally, their performance degrades over time, and manufacturers often provide only typical values rather than guaranteed min/max specifications.
Varistor and Suppressor
Varistors and suppressors are nonlinear resistive components commonly used for ESD protection. While they are cost-effective, they have some drawbacks. They tend to have high trigger voltages, high clamping voltages, and high impedance, meaning much of the surge energy still reaches the protected device. Low-capacitance suppressors usually clamp at 150–500V, with dynamic resistance ranging from 20 to 40 Ω. Due to their high impedance, most of the ESD current is directed to the protected circuit rather than to ground, reducing their effectiveness compared to other technologies.
Diode-Based Protection
ESD protection using semiconductor diodes is considered the most effective solution. These devices offer low clamping voltages, low impedance, fast response times, and high reliability. Modern ESD diodes can achieve equivalent capacitances as low as 1 pF, making them ideal for high-speed and high-integrity signal paths. Their ability to respond rapidly to surges ensures that the protected circuit remains safe without disrupting normal operation.
Key Factors in ESD Component Selection
When evaluating ESD protection components, three main factors should be considered: fast response time, low clamping voltage, and high surge current capability. These characteristics determine how effectively a device can protect sensitive electronics during an ESD event. Even if a product claims excellent performance, it's crucial to verify its capabilities using standardized tests like IEC61000-4-2. Industry standards often report clamping voltages based on 8µs rise and 20µs pulse durations, but true ESD pulses occur much faster—typically with a 1ns rise and 60ns duration. This distinction is important when assessing real-world performance.
