Will OLED become the preferred light source for lighting?

Thorn Lighting of Durham is leading a research and development project aimed at the development of new OLED materials and equipment to provide large-area lighting applications to replace fluorescent lamps. "We expect to develop high-quality light sources like sunlight." Project leader Dr. Geoff Williams introduced.

OLED panels are one of two technologies that are expected to replace ordinary fluorescent lamps and other light bulbs, and the other is electroluminescence using AC power.

Participants of the project are Durham University and Cambridge Display Technology (CDT), who received a £ 1.6 million grant from the UK Department of Trade and Industry. The total start-up capital is up to 3.3 million pounds.

"This university is the center of polymer energy level analysis." Williams said, "We will be able to review the reconstruction process to obtain feedback to help develop."

According to the agreement, CDT will provide OLED polymer materials, equipment construction and testing, as well as modeling and other technical support.

"Light-emitting polymer materials will be a process solution to provide potentially low-cost processing for large panels," CDT said.

The project will initially stay away from plastic materials because of their poor waterproof performance. "The initial product will use a solid substrate. The grid layer (located on a plastic substrate) has not yet reached the level of isolating oxygen and moisture." Williams, he did not explain in detail the type of solid substrate.

Performance indicators including color rendering will exceed existing fluorescent lamps. "Peaks and faults will appear in the spectrum, but the faults will not be very." Williams said.

Another goal is that after three years of development, it will be possible to produce 1,000 cd / m2 of luminous body, and the brightness will be reduced to 50% after 20,000 hours, Williams said. He also added: "In my experience, the brightness may be 80%."

The electrical efficiency will be similar to fluorescent lamps. "The goal within 5 years is to reach 50 lumens / watt," Williams said. "The ultimate goal is 150-200 lumens / watt. In 2015-2016, we will reach this level. By 2020, OLED will become the preferred light source for lighting."
