Micron Technology, Inc. has introduced a serial NAND flash technology that enables embedded applications to flexibly upgrade storage capacity. Micron's serial NAND flash has a minimum chip density of 1Gb, which allows customers to easily expand storage capacity beyond the existing storage capacity of serial NOR flash. In addition, Micron's flash memory is also significant. Cost-per-bit advantage.

Kevin Kilbuck, director of NAND market development at Micron, said, "Micron's serial NAND technology can provide the lowest cost serial interface flash memory per data bit. There are many embedded applications that require 128M or more of storage space. We expect capacity. Demand will continue to grow, which will require NAND-based storage solutions beyond NOR flash."

As embedded systems evolve, they need more robust, denser memory solutions. WiMAX devices, set-top boxes, printers, and other industrial and automotive applications used to be used for information decoding, and such an era is gone. Today, these devices have more sophisticated operating systems for managing multimedia, images, and other data-intensive content, and therefore require more storage space for the device.

Micron understands these application needs and leverages its reliable NAND technology to provide customers with a higher density, better write performance and better scalability storage solution, so users do not need to redesign the system from start to finish. Can expand the storage capacity of its application products. In addition, Micron's serial NAND technology uses the same package type as parallel NAND, so it can be used as a transition method to help manufacturers switch from serial interface products to parallel NAND interface products when needed.

Micron's Serial NAND Technology Advantage

• Compatibility: Compatible with industry standard Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) command sets.

• Maximize functionality: Deliver the density you need to maximize system functionality and reduce material costs. User-built content is stored directly on the device without the need for a separate NAND chip.

• Faster: Micron's serial NAND flash processing speed is 2.64 MB/s and write speed is faster than NOR flash (less than 0.5MB/s).

• Simple design: the external card slot is removed, thus reducing material costs; and the error correction code (ECC) on the chip is used to solve the complex problems associated with the original raw NAND flash.

• More secure: A read-only area and a protective block lock are provided to prevent unauthorized changes to the content stored on the device.

Product listing

Micron's 1Gb serial NAND technology is now available for trial use and is expected to be in volume production in the first quarter of 2009. Micron also plans to introduce a higher density serial NAND flash memory product in early 2009 with a capacity of 4Gb.
