In order to strengthen its commitment to providing high-quality integrated circuits for consumer audio electronics, Texas Instruments has announced a new addition to its line of high-performance digital audio processors. The TAS3308 Audio System-on-Chip is a single-chip SoC solution that provides audio equipment manufacturers with outstanding processing performance to create a variety of applications that meet stringent requirements, such as digital television (DTV) audio subsystems, mini-small micro-combinations Audio, 5.1 sound bars and other consumer audio electronics.

The TAS3308 is further enhanced with TI's legacy high-end audio solutions that integrate an analog multiplexer, stereo ADC, a high-performance digital audio processor and six pulse width modulation (PWM) output channels. This high level of hardware integration, combined with the intuitive and easy-to-use PurePath Studio software development environment, enables customers to bring advanced digital audio signal processing products to market with the lowest possible investment in hardware and software development resources.

TI's newest processors feature a fully integrated digital audio signal chain that includes PWM outputs to help reduce system cost and complexity and allow direct drive of Class D power stages. The TAS3308 audio SoC is based on proven technology from TI's highly successful audio processor family, which has been adopted by a range of consumer audio products from leading manufacturers. The core component of the new device is a high-performance digital audio processor based on the industry-leading TI digital signal processing technology. The outstanding high-resolution audio processing technology is attributed to the 48-bit data path, which provides the high-precision processing power required for advanced audio algorithms. The TAS3308 processor running at 135 MHz also includes an on-chip microcontroller for control and communication to optimize system performance. The integrated analog features include a 100 dB dynamic range (DNR) stereo single-ended ADC, a 10-input analog multiplexer, and six 105 dB DNR differential PWM outputs.

The device's processing performance advantages help designers to add value to products such as HDTV to meet consumer demand for high-fidelity sound quality, and to match HD images.

Flexible and in-depth software support for the TAS3308 helps speed time-to-market, increase customization and product differentiation, and help developers deliver high-quality audio to consumers at a lower cost. The device is fully supported by the traditional DSP software development kit and the PurePath Studio graphical development environment, an efficient drag-and-drop development environment that accelerates the design of new audio products. Developers have complete control over the audio processing process and take advantage of TI's extensive range of pre-programmed basic audio functions and advanced audio algorithms from leading third-party partners.

The TAS3308 SoC complements the TI's PWM power stage TAS5xxx series. The TAS3308's PWM control and TAS5xxx power stage are designed with TI's market-proven PurePath PWM technology for seamless board-level coordination, ensuring easy system integration and high-quality audio performance while minimizing development effort. The TAS5xxx devices are pin-compatible and power-scalable, enabling audio designers to create multiple multi-channel system configurations from 13 W to 315 W, based on the TAS3308 board layout. Unit channel output range.

Samples of the TAS3308 on-chip audio system are available now, with volume shipments scheduled for the first quarter of 2008. The device is available in a 100-pin QFP package.
