Artificial intelligence has become one of the most prominent technologies in today’s tech landscape, with numerous companies pouring significant resources into its development. As a leading chipmaker, MediaTek has also unveiled its own artificial intelligence strategy. On January 30, Lin Zongyao, MediaTek’s Chief Technology Officer, shared the company’s latest advancements in AI and outlined its future direction in this rapidly evolving field.
One of the key focuses of MediaTek’s AI strategy is terminal AI, which offers several major advantages over traditional cloud-based solutions. These four main benefits highlight why AI at the edge is becoming increasingly important for smart devices.
First, **responsiveness**. Many current smart devices collect data from the terminal, send it to the cloud for processing, and then return the results. In systems that require quick responses—such as in-vehicle infotainment or real-time voice assistants—this process can be slow. Terminal AI allows for faster feedback by processing data locally, ensuring a smoother user experience.
Second, **privacy protection**. With terminal AI, user data does not need to be uploaded to the cloud, reducing the risk of data exposure and enhancing user privacy.
Third, **reduced data transfer**. By performing AI tasks locally, the amount of data sent over the network is significantly reduced, lowering transmission costs and improving performance even when internet connectivity is poor.
Fourth, **lower power consumption**. Processing AI tasks on the device itself leads to more energy-efficient operations compared to cloud-based AI. This is especially beneficial for battery-powered devices, where power efficiency is critical.
Because of these advantages, terminal AI is emerging as a key trend in the evolution of smart devices. Lin Zongyao emphasized, “As a leading mobile chipmaker, MediaTek will continue to invest heavily in terminal intelligence in the future.â€
In line with this trend, MediaTek is developing a comprehensive AI deployment strategy. A complete AI system functions like a human being: it needs a brain (processing), eyes (sensors), and a mouth (communication). MediaTek’s AI platform integrates internal core technologies with external applications, creating a full ecosystem.
After building the AI platform, MediaTek looks to apply it across various products such as smartphones, digital TVs, routers, VADs, IoT devices, and automotive systems. The company’s AI strategy is rooted in its foundational strengths—such as ISP, connectivity, and Wi-Fi technologies—applying them across its entire product lineup.
Currently, very few IC design companies have the capability to integrate all these technologies and apply them across multiple product lines. MediaTek is one of the few that can do so, giving it a unique competitive advantage.
To support this vision, MediaTek launched the **NeuroPilot AI platform**, a solution that combines hardware AI processors with software services to deliver a complete AI experience. The platform enhances computing efficiency, improves product features through AI integration, supports mainstream AI frameworks, and provides a full software and hardware ecosystem.
The NeuroPilot platform supports popular AI architectures such as TensorFlow, Caffe, MXNet, and NNabla, and runs on both Android and Linux systems. It also includes a comprehensive SDK, allowing developers to easily build AI applications using MediaTek chips. The platform offers API support across different levels, making it adaptable for various use cases.
What makes NeuroPilot truly powerful is its cross-platform, cross-architecture, and cross-operating system capabilities. Developers can write code once and deploy it across multiple platforms, significantly improving development efficiency.
Moreover, the platform is highly open, supporting both high- and low-level APIs, enabling greater flexibility and customization. It also provides tailored solutions for partners based on MediaTek’s heterogeneous computing capabilities, allowing devices to leverage CPU, GPU, and APU for fast and efficient AI processing.
With its strong technical foundation and broad application potential, MediaTek’s NeuroPilot AI platform is well-positioned to drive the next wave of innovation in smart devices.
