Google has introduced an augmented reality (AR) feature to its MotionStills app for Android devices, bringing the fun AR stickers originally exclusive to Pixel 2 to a wider audience. This update allows users to place and interact with 3D models like chickens, robots, and dinosaurs in real-world environments using their smartphones.
The app now offers advanced surface tracking technology that keeps these virtual objects stable on different surfaces. Users can record videos or GIFs directly within the app, creating engaging and interactive content. Unlike other AR features powered by ARCore, MotionStills is compatible with all Android devices running version 5.1 and above, making it more accessible.
Google engineers Jianing Wei and Tyler explained that the AR mode uses real-time motion tracking, a six-degree-of-freedom system based on the same technology used in MotionText and YouTube’s privacy blur. This system accurately tracks both static and moving objects. The team enhanced this technology to ensure a smooth and fun AR experience on any Android device equipped with a gyroscope.
In December last year, Google launched AR stickers on Pixel 2, featuring characters from the latest Star Wars series, such as posts and Stormtroopers, as lifestyle ads placed in people's homes. This marks Google’s first major Android AR feature integrated into its ARCore platform. Similar to Apple’s ARKit, ARCore allows developers to place digital objects on real surfaces. However, unlike ARKit, which currently lacks wall detection, Android’s diverse hardware makes development more complex.
