NYSERDA offers $1 million in development funding for SSL products, systems

Multiple awards of up to $200,000 per project are available from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is inviting proposals for projects relating to solid-state lighting (SSL), and anticipates Making multiple awards of up to $200,000 per project, with $1 million available in total.
Specific, the applicants will either propose to develop new high efficiency solid-state lighting products/systems; or demonstrate and evaluate high-efficiency SSL systems; or test SSL products/or systems and make the test results available to a broad audience.
Examples of eligible projects include: energy-efficient LEDs, coatings, encapsulants, lenses, drivers, controls, fixtures, and integrated SSL systems; solar-powered LED lighting systems; LED exterior lighting systems designed to minimize energy use, light trespass and light pollution ; LED dimming systems; and demand-response projects for peak-load management.
Proposals, which are due May 28, 2008 by 5 pm EST, can put forth projects as follows:
New product development projects must develop SSL components and/or systems intended for LED ambient lighting applications. Projects are sought to manufacture energy-efficient SSL products for residential, commercial, and/or industrial applications. At least 50% co-funding is required for New product development projects.
Demonstration projects should feature a replicable lighting application and must include an independent, third-party evaluation. Demonstrations also must involve a commercial-available LED product(s) and a plan to widely disseminate the project results. At least 30% co-funding is Preferred for demonstration projects.
Testing projects must test commercially available SSL products/or systems and involved a NVLAP (National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program) facility that has plans to participate in the US DOE CaLiPER (Commercially Available LED Product Evaluation and Reporting) Program, follow US DOE and ASSIST ( Alliance for Solid-State Illumination Systems and Technologies) evaluation protocols, and widely disseminate test results. Manufacturers are ineligible to propose testing projects. At least 30% co-funding is preferred for testing projects.
SSL funding workshop
A SSL workshop is planned that may be of benefit to funding applicants. The workshop will present information on solid-state lighting product funding, demonstrations, and business opportunities in New York State.
The workshop will be held Thursday, May 1, 2008, from 8 am to 5 pm at the Marriott Hotel in Albany, NY. To register, visit New York Loves Clean Tech and open the workshop listing under News & Events or call CEG at ( 518) 465-8975 ext. 228. Cost is $75 per person.
Sponsored by Linc, the Lighting Cultivator; NYSERDA; and the NY Center for Economic Growth, the conference's agenda will include: SSL funding for businesses interested in working in New York State; critical research, development and demonstration/evaluation opportunities in SSL; and a Poster session to encourage networking and business partnerships in New York State.
