Introducing the concept of digital backend--Shape Blockage

Today, we introduced a key concept in the digital backend called "Shape Blockage." This feature is primarily used to prevent the design tool from placing any blocks within specific regions during the planning phase. Although it's not commonly used in everyday workflows, it can be very useful when you need to protect certain areas of the chip layout from unwanted placements. As shown in the image below, the tool will avoid placing any blocks inside the red-highlighted area.

Introducing the concept of digital backend--Shape Blockage

Shape Blockage is typically applied when there are specific regions that must remain free of logic or physical components, such as for thermal management, power integrity, or reserved space for future modifications. It helps maintain design rules and ensures that critical areas are not accidentally overwritten by automated placement tools.

To create a shape blockage using the command line, you can use the following syntax:

`create_shaping_blockage -boundary {{100 100} {200 200}}`

This command defines a rectangular area between the coordinates (100, 100) and (200, 200), which the tool will treat as a blocked region. You can also use the GUI to define shape blockages more interactively, as shown in the image below.

By utilizing Shape Blockage, designers can have greater control over their layouts and reduce the risk of unwanted placements in sensitive areas. It’s a powerful yet underused feature that can significantly improve the reliability and performance of your chip design.
