Today, we introduced a key concept in the digital backend called "Shape Blockage." This feature is designed to prevent the tool from placing any blocks within specified areas during the planning phase of chip design. While it's not commonly used in every project, it can be very useful in certain scenarios where specific regions need to remain free of logic or standard cells.
As shown in the image below, the red area represents the shape blockage region. The tool will avoid placing any blocks in this area, ensuring that critical parts of the design remain untouched. This is particularly helpful when you want to reserve space for power networks, clock distribution, or other special structures that shouldn't be interfered with by automated placement tools.
To create a shape blockage, you can use the following command:
`create_shaping_blockage -boundary {{100 100} {200 200}}`
This command defines a rectangular region from (100, 100) to (200, 200), which will be marked as a blockage area. You can adjust the coordinates based on your specific design requirements.
Alternatively, you can also create a shape blockage through the GUI. As shown in the image below, you can select the appropriate option and draw the desired area directly on the layout window.
Using shape blockage is an essential technique for advanced digital backend flows, especially in complex designs where precise control over placement is necessary. It helps maintain design integrity and ensures that critical regions are preserved throughout the physical implementation process.
