On February 9, Soraa, a California-based innovation company, announced the launch of its flagship product, a light-emitting diode (LED) lighting product called LED 2.0 technology.
It is reported that the new LED bulb invented by Soraa is 10 times brighter than ordinary LED. A 12-watt bulb is about as bright as a 50-watt halogen bulb, but saves 75%. Therefore, the product is considered to be the first LED bulb to rival the traditional 50-watt halogen bulb. What's more, the product does not require a mechanical fan and is optimized for electrical design, making it fully compatible with common transformers and dimmers, both indoors and outdoors.
The company's top management did not disclose the cost of the bulb, but said that within one year, the cost can be recovered by saving electricity bills, unlike ordinary LED products, which usually take several years to recover costs.
Soraa is the world's leading developer of GaN and developed the world's first commercial GaN LED product. Soraa was founded in 2008, and one of the founders, Nakamura Shuji, has the reputation of “the father of blue LEDâ€. Soraa President and CEO Kim Bingguo is also a distinguished person. In the past, he served as the vice president of Samsung Electronics' global marketing division in South Korea and the first senior vice president of Intel.
Compared with incandescent lamps and halogen bulbs, LED is a better choice because of its high efficiency, non-toxicity and long life. However, there are technical and cost challenges if LEDs are used to illuminate the entire room.
Typically, LEDs are fabricated by growing a thin layer of gallium nitride (GaN) on a sapphire or silicon substrate. Soraa has taken a different approach, using gallium nitride as the substrate, which reduces the mismatch between the two crystal structures. In this way, Soraa claims to increase brightness by a factor of 10.
This is why Soraa technology is known as LED 2.0 technology.
It is reported that a typical 50-watt LED light needs to integrate multiple light bulbs, but Soraa's LED light requires only one chip or diode to reach 50 watts.
Gallium nitride is significantly more expensive than sapphire or silicon based materials. Colin Humphreys, research director of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge and founder of semiconductor company CamGaN, believes that the use of gallium nitride on a large scale is expensive – a silicon wafer with a diameter of 6 inches costs only $30, and a 2-inch sapphire wafer is similar, but A 1-inch GaN wafer would cost $500. "Soraa may be able to significantly reduce the cost of GaN wafers, but it is certainly not possible to achieve the same level as silicon wafers and sapphire wafers," Humphreys said.
However, Jin Bingguo is not worried about this. He said that Soraa has mastered an innovative manufacturing technology that can significantly reduce the cost of GaN production, and claims that the substrate cost is only a small part of the entire bulb, but the benefits are far greater than the expenditure. “We have a simple, high-density light source that reduces system design and makes it the most cost-effective product available today,†said Jin Bingguo.
Previously, Soraa received more than $100 million in start-up funding through two rounds of financing, and plans to sell the first LED 2.0 products by the end of the quarter.
