High-power, high-brightness LEDs (HBLEDs) are becoming increasingly popular in lighting applications. The side-mounted ESD protection devices for HBLEDs now have a breakdown voltage of 100-V, while the existing side-mounted ESD protection devices have a breakdown voltage of 50V. The LuxGuard CM1771 addresses the growing range of high-power HBLED lighting applications, including high output power, high performance of over 120 lumens per watt, or the use of multiple HBLED driver devices in a serial arrangement. The ESD protection provided at high operating voltages demonstrates the problem of consuming more power in ESD strikes and the use of low dynamic clamping voltages.
The LuxGuard CM1771 offers powerful symmetrical ESD protection and a cost-effective die that can be easily integrated into a wide range of HBLED lamp modules. The CM1771 features a two-way ESD-protected back-to-back Zener diode configuration that safely consumes at least 6kV Human Body Model (HBM) ESD surge voltage. The device is available in a compact flip-chip package. Samples will be launched in October 2009 and volume production is scheduled for the first quarter of 2010. The sample price is $0.05, and the minimum order quantity is a crystal garden.
