Ecological distribution of smart sensor industry in China

On September 10, during the opening ceremony of the 2017 Global Sensors and Internet of Things Industry Summit—also known as SENSOR CHINA—China Telecom and the China High-end Chip Alliance jointly unveiled a comprehensive smart sensor industry map. This initiative aimed to provide an in-depth overview of key smart sensor products, the current state of critical industry segments, and the geographical distribution of related businesses across China. The map offers a clear and detailed view of the entire smart sensor technology landscape, helping stakeholders understand the industry's development trends and opportunities. At the summit, Deputy Director Xu Zhiyuan from the Institute of Information and Industrialization at the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology presented the industry map. He emphasized that intelligent sensing is a crucial foundation for ubiquitous perception in the era of the Internet of Things. As a key direction beyond the traditional semiconductor industry, it has gained significant traction in sectors such as automotive, home appliances, industrial equipment, healthcare, and environmental monitoring. Xu pointed out that smart sensors are now a vital indicator of a country’s level of informatization. However, he also highlighted challenges within the domestic smart sensor industry. Due to long research cycles, high development costs, and extended commercialization periods, the sector remains in its early stages. Many companies are small-scale, with limited technological independence. To address this, Xu called for clearer technology development strategies, stronger investment in basic research, enhanced industrial support systems, and broader application efforts to gradually build up the core competitiveness of local industries. Deputy Director Xu further explained that China’s smart sensor industry has a relatively complete ecosystem, with key players involved in design, manufacturing, packaging, and testing. Major product categories, including motion, pressure, fingerprint, and CMOS sensors, have achieved broad coverage. A preliminary regional industrial pattern has formed, with significant activity concentrated in the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Bohai Rim, and central and western regions. The release of the industry map was well-received by attendees, who praised China Telecom’s research capabilities and achievements in the smart sensor field. Following the presentation, a PPT session was held, offering further insights into the data and findings discussed. Several images were shown during the session, highlighting various aspects of the smart sensor industry and its development trajectory.
