On September 10, during the opening ceremony of the 2017 Global Sensors and Internet of Things Industry Summit—also known as SENSOR CHINA—China Telecom and the China High-end Chip Alliance jointly unveiled a comprehensive smart sensor industry map. This map provides an in-depth overview of key smart sensor products in China, the current status of critical links in the supply chain, and the geographical distribution of the industry. It offers a clear and detailed panoramic view of the smart sensor technology sector, highlighting its development and potential.
At the summit, Deputy Director Xu Zhiyuan from the Institute of Information and Industrialization of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology presented the industry map. He emphasized that intelligent sensing is a crucial foundation for ubiquitous perception in the era of the Internet of Things. As a significant direction beyond the traditional semiconductor industry, it has gained increasing traction in fields such as automotive, home appliances, industrial equipment, healthcare, and environmental monitoring. He noted that smart sensors are now a key indicator of a nation's level of informatization.
However, he also pointed out that due to challenges in basic theoretical research, product development, cost reduction, and long commercialization cycles, the domestic smart sensor industry remains small in scale and still follows global trends rather than leading them. To address this, he called for clearer technological development strategies, stronger foundational research, enhanced industrial support, and broader application and promotion efforts to gradually build up the core competitiveness of the local industry.
Deputy Director Xu further explained that China’s smart sensor ecosystem is relatively mature, with key enterprises involved in design, manufacturing, packaging, and testing. Major product categories such as pressure, motion, fingerprint, and CMOS sensors have achieved wide coverage. The industry has begun to form a spatial layout across four major regions: the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Bohai Rim, and central and western China, showing distinct geographical clustering.
The release of the industry map received strong recognition and praise from attendees, reflecting China Telecom's growing research capabilities and achievements in the field of smart sensors. Following this, the presentation continued with a series of slides, offering further insights into the industry's future.
