As the pace of technological advancement accelerates, the LED lighting industry is evolving at breakneck speed. The widespread adoption of LED lighting has lifted performance-to-price ratios to unprecedented levels while ensuring superior lighting effects. As consumer spending power increases, enhancing the quality of illumination has become a key focus in the lighting market.
We all know that modern consumers seek more than just basic lighting solutions. They look to create specific atmospheres using light, choosing color temperatures, color rendering indices, and color points to craft a cozy and inviting environment. For instance, lighting designers tailor their designs to suit different applications, from residential spaces to commercial settings, ensuring LED lighting enhances comfort and aesthetics.
Chip + Package: Vertical Integration in LED Technology
Development Crystal, led by General Manager Liu Xiuren, has been at the forefront of innovation in the LED industry since its inception. Established in 2012, the company has built several leading domestic LED epitaxial chip and packaging production lines. Supported by China Electronics and Jingyuan Optoelectronics, the company operates over 100 MOCVD machines and produces up to 500,000 2-inch wafers monthly. This places Development Crystal among China’s top epitaxial wafer manufacturers. Through its acquisition of Bridgelux, the company has gained access to advanced LED chip and packaging technologies, enabling faster production and establishing multiple sales channels under the US Bridgelux and China Electronics’ SINOTRON brands.
Unlike many domestic chip manufacturers, Development Crystal focuses on vertical integration via chip + package. Their comprehensive business model spans the entire supply chain, from epitaxial wafers to finished lighting applications. This approach ensures rapid responses and minimizes overall supply chain costs.
Bridgelux Products with Global Patent Protection
In 2016, Development Crystal acquired Bridgelux, which allowed them to quickly enhance the lumen output of Bridgelux’s COB products and launch their seventh-generation COB series. Additionally, they introduced globally patented SMD2835 products across various wattages (0.2W-3V, 0.5W-3V, and 1W-9V), offering cost-effective options for customers worldwide.
Furthermore, Bridgelux launched SMD5050 products earlier this year, which boast industry-leading luminous efficiency. These are ideal for outdoor streetlights, floodlights, and high-ceiling industrial applications. The SMD5050 Gen2 product meets demanding DLC4.2 standards for both efficiency and longevity. Meanwhile, the SMD2835 Gen2 product, with a color temperature of 4000K and a CRI of 80, achieves luminous efficacy exceeding 185 lm/W, quickly gaining popularity among customers, especially those exporting to the U.S.
In commercial spaces, COB-based products collaborate with the American Lighting Research Center to deliver high-quality lighting experiences. By focusing on behavioral science, these lights prioritize human-centric design, emphasizing high color gamut (GAI), high color rendering index (CRI), and superior quality. Specialized color points cater to diverse applications, such as highlighting red meat or ceramics, creating atmospheres reminiscent of traditional lighting technologies while maintaining modern functionality.
The Expanding Packaging Market
The global LED industry is rapidly shifting towards China, with Chinese manufacturers now dominating the chip market, capturing over 70% of the market share. Similarly, the packaging sector is witnessing a similar migration, with China's packaging capacity expected to grow steadily. Data shows that China’s LED packaging market expanded from 64.4 billion yuan in 2015 to 73.7 billion yuan in 2016, representing a 14% increase. Domestically, local packaging firms hold a dominant position in the Chinese market. The withdrawal of some international players has created additional opportunities for domestic companies like Development Crystal.
Liu Xiuren emphasized that the future of packaging lies in energy efficiency, color rendering, dimming capabilities, and smart lighting solutions. Market segmentation will drive further innovation.
The Quest for Superior Light Quality
As consumer preferences evolve, the LED industry is transitioning from mere efficiency to superior light quality. Liu Xiuren noted that improvements in light quality are driven by several factors, including growing awareness of international standards, the rise of domestic lighting designers, increasing concerns over product homogenization, and heightened expectations for personalized lighting solutions.
Looking ahead, Liu Xiuren believes that companies will increasingly focus on holistic approaches, moving beyond individual product parameters to address the entire value chain. The future of LED lighting lies in delivering enhanced light quality that meets consumer demands for comfort, ambiance, and functionality.
