Analyst Horace Dediu saw Apple reveal a rare piece of data in its earnings report, that is, the number of active devices on iOS reached 1.3 billion, which is 30% more than two years ago. The first time Apple announced the number of active users was in January 2016, when the data was 1 billion.
Dediu said he calculated the average life of the device by the amount of equipment sold per quarter and the number of active iOS devices. To this end, he produced a chart showing the total number of devices sold by Apple since the second quarter of 2007. Then draw a curve to represent the active iOS device. The area between the total number sold and the curve represents how many devices have been retired since 2007.
To calculate the average life of decommissioned equipment in the most recent quarter, Dediu decided to assume a value for the decommissioned equipment, such as "x", subtracting 1.3 billion active equipment from the assumed total, and then comparing it to the previous quarter's sales. Compare until this data is close to the cumulative number of devices sold.
Dediu's second picture draws the average life of the equipment for a particular quarter based on the first image. The chart shows that since 2012, the average life expectancy has increased every few quarters, breaking four years in early 2017, and four years ago when Apple introduced the iPhone 6, it shows that there are still a lot of iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S users.
