Robotic arms are often difficult to handle in soft, flexible fabrics, and can only be processed into simple shapes such as seat cushions, but it is almost impossible to produce a complete garment.
In order to solve this problem, Sewbo took a different approach, starting with fabrics and temporarily hardening the fabric with polyvinyl alcohol to make it easy for robots to “assemble†them.
The company's founder Zornow said:
“We tried a variety of fabrics and the hardening process worked on them, including cotton, denim, lace and some decorative fabrics. This is limited to materials that are wet throughout, so it is not suitable for coating materials such as leather. Or a fabric that has been waterproofed."
In the process of fabric splicing, the robot does not use the sewing needle, but uses an ultrasonic welder to suture the edge of the stiff fabric piece, and then heat the fabric to make it soft. At this time, the clothes can be made as needed. Remodeling, set after cooling.
After the assembly is completed, it is only necessary to put the clothes in hot water and simply rinse to remove the water-soluble reinforcing agent on the fabric to obtain a clothes of normal material, and the reinforcing agent can be recycled and reused.
This technology has applications in shopping bags, cushions, sick suits, etc. It is even expected to be used in the production of uniforms. It is said that the US military is very interested in the concept of Sewbo. "We are talking to them," Zornow said.
