Similarities and differences between lamps and lamps

Shanghai Times Light Lighting Appliance Testing Co., Ltd.

Lamps are an indispensable electrical appliance in people's daily life. Their function is to provide artificial lighting to meet the lighting needs of various places. As a terminal electrical product, the luminaire should be composed of optical system, mechanical system and electrical system. According to different work requirements, the main tasks of luminaire design are:

- The optical system of the luminaire is designed to meet the lighting requirements of the place of use, and the optical system of the luminaire is composed of a light source cavity, a lamp holder, a lens, a reflector, a grille, and the like;
- The mechanical system design of the luminaire enables the luminaire to have a safe mechanical structure and adapt to the working conditions of the place of use and can work safely and reliably. The structure of the luminaire should also provide good working conditions for the light source in the luminaire, so that the lamp has good performance. The mechanical system of the luminaire consists of a casing, a cover, a sealing ring, a wire trough, and a mounting device;
- The electrical system design of the luminaire provides the normal working current and voltage for the light source, so that the luminaire has a safe electrical structure and good electromagnetic compatibility.

A light is a light source in a luminaire.

Due to the different functions of the lamps and lamps, the requirements of the relevant product standards are also different. In order to clearly define the difference between the two, we can analyze from the following aspects.

1. Definition of luminaires, lamps and LED modules - luminaire: Any device that can distribute, illuminate or transform one or more light sources and includes all the components necessary to support, secure and protect the light source (but It does not include the light source itself, as well as the necessary circuit aids and the means to connect them to the power supply.

Note: An illuminator with an integral non-replaceable light source is considered a luminaire, but the monolithic source and integral self-ballasted lamp are not tested.
Lamp: A light source made to produce optical radiation (usually visible).
Note: This term is also sometimes used for certain types of illuminators.

-LED module
A combined illumination light source device. In addition to one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs), other components, such as optical, mechanical, electrical, and electronic components, may be included, but do not include control devices.
The types of LED modules include self-ballasted LED modules, integral LED modules, integral self-ballasted LED modules, and built-in LED modules ( Built-in LED module), built-in self-ballasted LED module, independent LED module and independent self-ballasted LED module Etc., the above various LED modules belong to the light source.

2. Certain types of "lighting fixtures" are called "lights"
From the definition of lamps and lamps, it can be known that in general, "light" refers to the light source, and various types of lamps are named after the physical principle of illumination, such as incandescent lamps, high pressure sodium lamps, metal halide lamps, fluorescent lamps, ultraviolet lamps. , electroluminescent lamps, tungsten halogen lamps, etc., the naming and classification of lamps is not related to the application site and the lamps used; and "lighting" refers to the illuminator, which includes the accessories and circuits required to illuminate the light source. The optical components that are redistributed by the light source to meet the application requirements, and the assembly of the components required for the installation, fixing, and adjustment of the lamps. The classification and naming of the lamps are related to the installation method or the place or purpose of the design, such as fixed type. Ceiling lamps, portable table lamps, portable floor lamps, road lighting, tunnel lighting, patio lighting, floodlights and emergency lighting, etc.

But as the "note" in the definition of "light", the term "light" is sometimes used in some types of illuminators. Perhaps because of the habitual relationship, many people refer to “road lighting” as “street light” and “ceiling surface mounted light fixture” as “ceiling light”, but the street light and ceiling light here are not light sources, but roads. Lighting fixtures and ceiling mounted luminaires.

The main method for distinguishing light sources from lamps and lanterns is to see whether it is related to the principle of illumination or to the installation method or the place where the design is applied. For example, tungsten lamps, fluorescent lamps, gas discharge lamps, LEDs, etc. belong to the light source, and street lamps, table lamps, Ceiling lights, etc. belong to the luminaire. Similarly, since "road lighting LED lights" and "decorative lighting LED lights" are related to the place where the design is applied, they are all lighting fixtures.
