Global LED market competition intensifies the threat of the three giants

The global LED market is intensifying competition, and the rapidly growing Korean and Taiwanese companies have threatened the status of the three giants in controlling the market for a long time.

According to market research firm IMS Research, Nichia, Japan, ranked the world's largest LED supplier with a market share of 24% in 2007. Osram and Lumileds/Philips ranked second and third with 10.5% and 6.5%.

IMS Research analyst Jamie Fox said that the 2008 data has not yet been drawn, but he believes that the top three rankings will not change.

However, if South Korea's Seoul Semiconductor maintains its current momentum in the LED market, the rankings may change in the next few years.

In the next few years, Lumileds may encounter challenges from Seoul Semiconductor. In the past few years, Seoul has been growing faster than the overall LED market, and has been climbing from the 10th to the 4th.

Currently in the top ten are Japan's Citizen and Toyoda Gosei, as well as Taiwan's Everlight and Kingbright.

According to IMS Research, some LED companies are more focused on profitability and product quality, and are looking at the long-term development of the lighting market, not just focusing on maximizing revenue.

The company believes that Cree is such a company, Cree's strength is estimated to squeeze into the top five, although it can not be seen from the package LED revenue.
