DCS systems, or Distributed Control Systems, are advanced automation solutions that go beyond PLCs. They are widely used in industries such as chemical processing and power generation. As the demand for more sophisticated automation continues to grow, traditional DCS systems are no longer sufficient and require modernization.

These systems utilize multiple computers to manage and control various loops within a production process. They allow for centralized data acquisition, system management, and control. At the core of DCS is the use of microprocessors to handle individual control loops, while higher-level control is typically managed by small to medium-sized industrial computers or high-performance microprocessors.

Over time, certain limitations in DCS systems have become apparent. Some of the key issues include:

4. Limited interoperability: Although analog devices commonly use the 4–20 mA standard, many technical specifications remain proprietary to manufacturers. This results in limited compatibility between different brands, forcing users to rely on specific vendors and reducing their ability to choose the most cost-effective solutions.

As industries evolve, there's a growing need for more flexible, reliable, and intelligent control systems that can overcome these challenges and support future automation demands.
