The serial server module is the central hardware component within a serial server, often referred to as an embedded module. It integrates all the software functions of the serial server, allowing users to configure parameters directly through the module. In some cases, users may want to embed the functionality of the serial server into their own circuit board instead of using an external device. This is where the serial server embedded module comes into play.
These modules come in various forms, such as RS232, RS485, and TTL level modules. For example, the ZLSN2000 is a dual-row pin module that connects to a network port via four pins and provides two pins for a TTL-level serial port. This can be adapted to RS232 or RS485 levels depending on the application, or it can be directly connected to a user’s microcontroller unit (MCU) for direct communication.

When working with the serial server module, several key parameters must be set, including the local IP address, operating mode, and serial port baud rate. These settings are crucial for ensuring proper communication between devices.
There are three main methods to configure the serial server module:
1. **Web Page Method**:
The module runs a small built-in web server, making it easy to access via a browser. Simply enter the module's IP address (default is 192.168.1.200) into the address bar and log in with the default password (123456). From there, users can modify settings and submit changes. This method is user-friendly and doesn't require additional software, but it requires the computer to be on the same network segment as the module. Some advanced configurations might still need other tools.
2. **Windows Tool Method**:
This is the recommended approach. Users can run the Zhuo ZLVircom or ZLDevManager software on their Windows machine. These tools allow searching for all serial server modules on the LAN, making it easier to manage multiple devices without remembering IP addresses. ZLDevManager is particularly useful because it doesn’t require installation and offers a straightforward interface. Advanced parameters can also be adjusted through this method.
3. **Serial Port AT Command Method**:
This method allows users to configure the module directly through the serial port, without needing a separate computer. After connecting the module to the user’s MCU via a TTL UART serial port, the MCU can send AT commands to adjust settings on the fly. This is especially useful when configuring the module in the field, such as setting the IP address or destination IP dynamically.
Each configuration method has its own advantages, and the choice depends on the user's specific needs and environment. Whether you're looking for ease of use, flexibility, or remote management, the serial server module offers versatile options to meet your requirements.
