This is absolutely not allowed. The small size of a permanent magnet motor is due to its permanent magnet characteristics. Another key feature is its high starting torque. This is because the servo actuator can accurately detect the magnetic pole position, aligning the stator poles orthogonally for maximum output. To find the pole, the sensor in the servo must be active. Servo motors also have another important characteristic: their stator resistance is much lower than that of asynchronous motors, typically in the milliohm range.
When a power frequency supply is connected to a permanent magnet motor, it's easy to imagine how much current would flow. If the open-loop power frequency is not aligned with the magnetic pole, the torque will be low, and the starting speed will be slow, potentially causing the motor to overheat or even burn out.
The intention here is to compare the features of Siemens asynchronous and synchronous motors. However, it's worth noting that servo motors can also operate in open-loop control. For example, when using an MM440 drive, this method has been discussed in previous posts but isn't covered in full detail here.
When controlling an encoderless servo motor, the process usually starts with open-loop control before transitioning into closed-loop servo control.
There are different methods for starting a synchronous motor. One approach is asynchronous start: the motor runs as an induction motor without excitation, and once it reaches near-synchronous speed, the excitation current is applied to pull it into synchronization. Another method involves using a variable frequency drive to gradually increase the stator voltage frequency while applying the rotor excitation current, allowing the rotor's magnetic field to synchronize with the rotating magnetic field from the stator at startup.
Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right motor type based on application requirements, especially in industrial automation and motion control systems where precision and efficiency are crucial.
