iSuppli: Thai floods have no effect on semiconductor growth rate

Market research firm IHS iSuppli said that although several chip suppliers have recently stated that their package and test plants have been suspended due to flooding in Thailand, the extent of the impact will not affect the growth rate of the entire semiconductor industry.

According to IHS iSuppli, the manufacturers of wafers whose packaging sites are affected by flooding in Thailand include On Semiconductor, Rohm, Lapis Semiconductor, Hana Semiconductor, Stars Microelectronics Vigilant Technology, STATS ChipPac and Toshiba. As for other companies that also have closed beta sites in Thailand, such as Microchip, Maxim, NXP, Spansion, UTAC, etc., although not directly affected by flooding, some of them are indirectly affected because other suppliers are affected by flooding.

Earlier, On Semi stated that the closure of the company’s two sealing and testing plants in Thailand could cause the company’s fourth-quarter revenue to lose US$60 million; Rohm’s sole location in Thailand was shut down in mid-October. The company is responsible for the packaging and testing of wafers, discrete transistors, diodes, resistors and tantalum capacitors. The company intends to move the production line elsewhere.

Thailand has suffered the most serious floods in decades. To date, more than 350 victims have been displaced and many victims have been displaced. Many local electronics and automotive manufacturers have also been forced to shut down factories.
